There Is No Equal – JWC Rep Insider
Muffin Monster® – There Is No Equal
When we say There Is No Equal to the Muffin Monster, these are not empty words. When Vogelsang tried to capture two Muffin Monster Manholes (M3) in New York based on our specification with “an equal” bid at a can’t refuse price, Ryan Boshart of GP Jager picked apart the Vogelsang product and convinced the customer that Vogelsang’s product was NO EQUAL! Here are the key points of his successful effort.
- Vogelsang’s gearbox is oiled filled which requires oil replacement every 2,000 hours – that’s every 83 days with 24/7 operation! Our specification clearly states the gearbox is grease lubricated and our O&M requires grease replacement every 5 years. Replacing oil in the gearbox every 83 days is NOT equal to replacing grease every 5 years.
- The Vogelsang gearbox is not designed to be submerged. Our gearbox does not have that limitation. A Vogelsang gearbox that cannot be submerged is NOT equal to the JWC gearbox.
- Vogelsang’s seals are in an oil-filled buffer chamber that also requires an oil change every 2,000 hours. Our seals specification clearly states no lubricants are required to operate. Again, the Vogelsang solution is NOT equal to the JWC solution.
- While Vogelsang’s literature states they have an immersible motor, their actual motor data sheet clearly states it is a submersible motor. Our specification required an immersible motor rated to operate 40 consecutive days in submergence at a depth of 40 feet, yet capable of operating in air 100% of time with no external cooling. A submersible motor is NOT equal to an immersible motor.
- Finally, our specification required individual cutters for the cutter stack which is counter to Vogelsang’s monolithic cutter stack. Individual cutters can be manufactured to tighter tolerances than a monolithic stack which allows superior cutting performance. Additionally, with individual cutters, we can double stack cutters at the bottom for improved wear-resistance where it is gritty and stack the best performing cutter above for the expected floating debris at the installation. A monolithic cutter stack is NOT equal to the performance of a cutter stack using individual cutters.
Educating the customer on these key design and performance differences convinced the customer that the Vogelsang product was NOT “an equal” and we won the job without getting into a bidding war.
If you need assistance with Muffin Monster and Channel Monster® opportunities where the competition claims their solution is “an equal” to our specification, please work with the JWC team to identify the key performance differences to educate our customers There Is No Equal to the JWC product. And don’t forget we have the competitive 1-page product comparisons in the Knowledge Base section on Reps Only.

Meet Your JWC Support Team – Dennis Birgen

Dennis has been in Inside Technical Sales his whole tenure here at JWC. With 10 years of experience, he can say that he probably has quoted every product at least once. Chain and Rake Monsters and Finescreen Monsters have been his area of focus for the last 5 years.
When Dennis is away from work, he likes to go on hikes, take his rescue dog, Uni, on walks, and exercise. His vacations are often to warm water beach locales around the world in search of the perfect wave. While he has surfed in Costa Rica, Sri Lanka and Hawaii, his favorite place was Bali, which he notes was a wonderful place to travel along with having great waves. His bucket list of locations to surf include Morocco and Panama. Ironically, he does not spend a lot of time surfing in California due to its cold water and crowded beaches.
We hope you will have the opportunity to work on a screen opportunity with Dennis soon. When you do, you might ask him about Uni or surfing locations around the world.
Welcome Ben Wells
