Membrane Bioreactors, or MBRs, are increasingly becoming the preferred technology for water and wastewater treatment where high-quality treated water is required, or where space is limited. Pretreatment screening is required for MBRs to protect them against mechanical damage from sharp or abrasive particles and to prevent clogging or fouling from hair and other fibrous materials. Pretreatment screening is the number one concern of facility managers and engineers responsible for the efficient operation of membrane bioreactors.
Pretreatment Screens for Membrane Bioreactors
A membrane bioreactor requires some type of fine screening to operate properly and limit the potential for clogging or excessive maintenance. JWC offers a variety of fine screening solutions suited for working with MBRs.
The JWC DrumScreen Monster is ideally suited for installations with pumped flows. The screening process is fully contained within the drum which eliminates the potential for bypassing around sealing elements in the screen. Screening drums are available with wedge wire, perforated plate or wire mesh cloth depending on the applications.
Band Screens Monster® and Finescreen Monster® products from JWC Environmental are designed for superior screening protection of MBRs in high-flow channel installations. These products are commonly at the headworks of municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Both screens feature JWC’s Staple Guard UHMW screening panels that prevent hair and fibers from “stapling” or “hair-pinning” through the holes in the panels. This provides better screen clean-off and lower carryover of debris that can adversely affect the operation of an MBR.
