Case Study: Muffin Monster Protects Spanish Biogas Facility

Biogas facilities commonly utilize a wide range of organic feedstock materials include food waste, manure, and agricultural waste. Feedstock is processed in a sludge or slurry form and is moved around the facility with some type of sludge pump. Progressive cavity pumps are one of the most common options for a sludge pump due to their ability to move viscous liquids.

The organic feedstock is often comprised of mixed waste and can often include unexpected debris like large, tough pieces of inorganic debris such as metals and plastics. This inorganic material, if left uninhibited, can clog a sludge pump or pipeline within the anaerobic digester systems and cause the process to breakdown. This tougher debris in feedstock can be extremely problematic for progressive cavity pumps that are susceptible to damage within the pump’s costly rotor or stator components.

In 2013, a biogas facility in Catalonia, Spain was experiencing these very problems. The mixed organic waste coming to the plant had hard inorganic solids that were never expected in the planning stages of the facility. The debris was finding its way to the progressive cavity pumps and wreaking havoc. Plant personnel worked with Protech Continental, the exclusive JWC Environmental distributor in Spain, to assist in solving the problem.  The team was able to devise a long-term solution that would precondition the biogas feedstock, protect the sludge pump, and keep the biogas system running smoothly.
