Meet Discharge Permit Requirements with Solids Reduction

Seafood Processing utilizes substantial amounts of water that must be pumped, processed and treated.  The treatment of seafood wastewater can be a significant concern for facilities that must have economical strategies to meet discharge permit requirements as well as recover potentially valuable resources within the wastewater streams.  Additionally, plants will often require solutions to break down solids in waste byproducts so they can be effectively pumped, processed, transported or disposed of in the ocean or municipal wastewater systems. JWC offers seafood processing equipment to help improve the efficiency of seafood processing facilities and at-sea processing ships in the areas of wastewater treatment, recovery of valuable processing byproducts and reducing the volume of the waste.

Seafood Processing Equipment – Screens

Seafood processing generates a significant amount of wastewater with relatively high concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS) or biological oxygen demand (BOD). To produce the fresh and frozen fish we see at the market, processors work through various wastewater-producing steps: thawing, eviscerating, washing, pre-cooking, spray cooling, solution filling, can washing, sterilization, and more.

Seafood Processing Equipment – Screens

Wastewater from these activities is high in oil content and must be treated before discharge to the city sewer to limit municipal surcharges imposed for exceeding limits on TSS and BOD. It is also important to control the odor that comes from storing and cooking seafood products. Most seafood wastewater treatment processes require coarse and fine screening, grit removal, chemical/physical clarification, biological treatment and sludge management. JWC offers seafood processing equipment for most of these wastewater treatment processes, including grinders and screens.

Rotary drum screens are an effective and efficient method to remove organic waste from seafood processing wastewater. Screening out of organic matter can substantially reduce the BOD levels in the waste stream and enhance further wastewater treatment processes. JWC offers IPEC Internally Fed Rotary Drum Screens for seafood processing wastewater applications.  Screens are customized to target the fish and seafood waste to be screened out and ensure a high capture rate.

Seafood Processing Equipment – Grinders

Seafood Processing Equipment – Grinders

Seafood processing and at-sea processing ships can produce waste with numerous tough solids, such as large salmon carcasses, halibut heads, seabass heads and even the largest sheepshead fish.  If disposing of these solids into the ocean, these solids must be ground down to below ½” to meet MARPOL Annex V food waste disposal requirements. For seafood processing plants, these solids can clog pumps and create other problems in production.  JWC’s SHRED and HYDRO industrial grinders can be used to grind up fish and seafood waste as well as other debris to a small particle size to protect pumps and other process equipment or to meet MARPOL Annex V food waste disposal size requirements. Grinding can also be used to reduce the volume of waste and minimize transportation costs.

Benefits

  • Effectively removes process water from larger solids
  • High capture rates reduce BOD levels in further waste treatment processes
  • Reduce waste volume to minimize transportation costs
  • Protect downstream equipment from tough solids
  • Comply with MARPOL Annex V food waste disposal requirements
  • Reduce maintenance costs and downtime, grind even rocks, or fish hooks without jamming
  • Adapts to most applications with little or no modification to piping, channel, or power

Typical Applications

  • MARPOL Annex V Food Waste Disposal Regulation
  • At-sea fish processors
  • Fishing bait recycling
  • Frozen fishing bait pre-breakers
  • Shore-based fish processors
  • Crab processing facilities
  • Pet food manufacturing facilities
  • Seafood composting facilities
