Biogas
Biogas is produced from the digestion of organic matter such as wastewater, grease, food waste, animal manure and municipal solid waste. After it is processed to required standards of purity, biogas becomes a renewable substitute for natural gas and can be used to fuel natural gas generators or fuel cells.
Municipal sewage contains organic biomass solids, and many wastewater treatment plants use anaerobic digestion to reduce the volume of these solids. Digestion stabilizes sewage sludge and destroys pathogens. Sludge digestion produces biogas containing 60-percent to 70-percent methane, with an energy content of about 600 Btu per cubic foot.
Many wastewater treatment plants with digesters are burning the biogas for heat to maintain digester temperatures or producing electrical power to run the plant itself.
